Updating Maya on Windows updates the application in place, on Mac it adds a new copy of the entire application and you have to manually remove the old. On my Mac I could only run Maya 2017, if I tried 2018 I could add a cube and it would crash. I have fewer crashes, a specific example is Maya 2018. Maya seems to work much better on Windows.
